For Modi, Mamata & PK’s 2021 Bengal victory has been more profitable than his own party’s defeat

Date:

Mamata Banerjee and her TMC have recently launched an attack on Congress that could be termed more viscous than what generally comes from BJP.
In fact, BJP could take a lesson or two from TMC on how to attack and damage a 135-year-old party.

In this inter-Mahagathbandhan fight, it is Modi who must be finding his future prospects the brightest. TMC’s recent forays into Tripura, Goa & Uttar Pradesh are only good news for BJP as these new developments does not affect the party in any way in the short term.
However, for Congress, it is a bigger threat of complete annihilation than what the BJP possesses on it.

Prashant Kishore’s recent statement about BJP also provides a glimpse into the thought process of the Mamata camp.
Prashant Kishore recently said, “Rahul Gandhi does not realise that BJP will remain powerful for many decades.” PK’s statement along with Mamata’s treatment of Congress as enemy number 1 suggests the fight against BJP by regional parties is over.

Even assuming the best possible scenarios it will take decades for TMC to replace Congress as the principal opposition party. AAP has been trying to become Congress for over eight years now. Still, it is yet to make any significant impact in states other than Delhi. However, the process of diminishing Congress vote share has started already.

TMC at best might also succeed in becoming a persistent leech sucking out vote share of Congress in elections after elections. While the BJP stays intact or even expands further as opposition disintegrates.

It is not just TMC, even the RJD, the biggest regional party in Bihar is showing signs of capitulation as Lalu Prasad Yadav meets BJP leaders. BSP, TRS, DMK, the list goes on. State after state, regional overlords are being seen bowing down in front of the mighty BJP and RSS machinery.

Amidst this capitulation, it is the Congress that has the mighty challenge of not only defeating BJP but also finishing the regional parties that are eyeing the Congress space to expand.

Irrespective of how the BJP is performing, it is absolutely important for strong united opposition to be present in the Indian democracy. The opposition becomes an important outlet for the frustration that might develop in citizens who are unhappy with the government. Without any opposition, the protests like that of farmers could easily turn into a full-fledged rebellion against the state as disgruntled citizens might find no other way to fight for any cause they find justified.

The regional party’s recent inward focus on fighting for the opposition space is detrimental to the stability of the country. BJP could rule without accountability while opposition becomes a room of random leaders making noise from different states.
History tells, unaccountable leadership almost always leads to tyranny and failure of a state.

In such a scenario it is important for Congress to throw caution to the wind and give a more aggressive fight from states where it has historically been a big player. States like West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra cannot be left to regional players and needs to be under the control of the grand old party for the long term survival of the party.
These states could be considered opinion-making states due to their large demography and mobile population.

Certainly in the present condition the Congress cannot go all out to claim all the states at one go. However, the effort to make itself big should start now. Congress leadership in the targeted states should be more identifiable with regional socio-economic and cultural ethos. Any kind of alliance should be made keeping in mind the long prospects of the party.

Alliances were beneficial when Congress was in a position of strength during the UPA days. But in 2021, even a big alliance will be useless in defeating BJP. At most, it could only become an arrangement to save each other a few seats that could ensure their survivability. Such an arrangement cannot inspire the masses to vote against a stable BJP.
As such, now is the real-time for Congress to really go it alone and in a strategic manner to not only ensure its dominance but to actually defeat BJP.
