The recent Assembly polls was a clear indication that the Congress needed to put its house in order, Congress president Smt. Sonia Gandhi told in the virtual meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). The meeting of the top Congress body has been convened to deliberate and introspect on the party’s poor performance in the just-concluded assembly elections.
Ms. Gandhi demanded that the party “take note of our serious setbacks and put our house in order”, after yet more disappointing performances in elections. “We need to understand why in Kerala and Assam we failed to dislodge the incumbent governments, and why in West Bengal we drew a complete blank. These will yield uncomfortable lessons, but if we do not face up to the reality, if we do not look the facts in the face, we will not draw the right lessons,” she said in her opening remarks.
She intend to set up a small group to look at every aspect that caused such reverses and report back very quickly,”
Ms. Gandhi also asked Assam general secretary Jitender Singh, Kerala general secretary Tariq Anwar and West Bengal in-charge Jitin Prasada to make a presentation and explain very frankly why the party lost in these States. Told them to brief on party’s performance in their respective States. “We want them to tell us why we performed well below expectation. These results tell us clearly that we need to put our house in order,” she added.
The Congress is also set to discuss elections to choose a new Full time Congress Chief, Ms. Gandhi also wanted the opinion of the CWC on the issue of appointing a full-time Congress chief by June-end as per the party’s earlier schedule before the second Covid wave hit. The proposed date of the election is June 23, with nominations to close by June 7. However, final confirmation of the polling date is pending. However, it decided to postpone them again amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the country.
Ms. Gandhi also stressed upon the ongoing Covid situation in the country in her opening remarks, “The most important need is to rapidly expand vaccination coverage & ensure that no eligible citizen gets left out. INC stands prepared to work with the Union government in this most important and urgent of tasks” On behalf of Indian National Congress , She also thanked all countries and organization who are helping India and rushed to our assistance. She further mentioned about the AICC’s COVID control room and similar COVID relief control rooms at the state levels
