Modi-Trump Drug Positioning : Indians Kept At Stake

With the Trump suggesting a retaliation against India, after India puts up a ban on the drugs which are being used to fight against the novel corona virus, and then India almost surrendering to the demands of the US President has raised serious questions over the stand of government towards the ban put up just a day before and then lifting it up amid pressure.

The entire incident has put up a serious question mark over the ability of the Modi government over the diplomatic policy and the opposition has called it a pure diplomatic failure.

Leaving that, here is a look at how Indian current stock of the hydroxychloroquine can help the country to fight with corona virus and whether the stock is sufficient to deal the growing cases of corona virus in the country.

With the current capacity, India can produce 40,000 kg of hydroxychloroquine per month. That’s 20 crore tablets. While the recommended dosage of the drug for the novel virus is still unclear, it is more likely to be 10-14 tablets. This means that India can provide complete dosage to 1.7- 2 crore people of the country, which is about 1.3% of our population.

Talking about USA, it has already stockpiled about 31 million doses which can provide complete dosage to 2.2-3.1 million people in US which is roughly about 0.8 – 0.9% of US population. If India exports 20% of what we can produce to USA, which is very much likely after the statement of Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Shrivastava, US will cover 1.5%-2.2% of US population, while India’s coverage will drop to 0.9-1.2% of population.

So it’s quite clear that by going for such deal, India and its people will be at loss, while USA has made its position safe by playing pressure politics.
