Centre Brings Notification of GNCT Act, LG is Now Government in Delhi

Date:

The Modi government at the Center has increased the power of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. Now the government in Delhi will mean the Lieutenant Governor, because no executive action can be taken without the approval of LG. The Central Government has issued a notification in this regard after the President approved the National Capital Territory Government (Amendment) Act 2021 i.e. the GNCT Act. According to this notification, the National Capital Territory Government (Amendment) Act in Delhi has come into effect from April 2021.

The notification stated that the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2021 is notified with effect from 27 April. Now in Delhi, the meaning of the government is the Lieutenant Governor.

Accordingly, in the context of the legislation passed in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, the government will mean the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the city government will have to seek the advice of the Lieutenant Governor before taking any executive step. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on March 22 and in the Rajya Sabha on March 24. It is believed that this law may increase the tension of the Kejriwal government, which was pointed out by Kejriwal himself.

Sources say that there is a need to clarify the situation after the decision of the Supreme Court which came only in the beginning of 2019. Therefore, these amendments have been done to reduce the conflict between the Delhi Government and the Lieutenant Governor for powers and rights.
