Court to Pronounce Verdict Today in RG Kar Hospital Rape Case

The much-awaited verdict in the case of rape and murder of a doctor on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital will be pronounced on Saturday. There was anger and resentment across the country regarding this matter and there were long protests against it across the country. The court of Sealdah Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das had completed the hearing on this case on January 9 and the verdict will be pronounced on Saturday.

Sanjay Roy, who worked as a civilian volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested as an accused in the RG tax case. Sanjay Roy was accused of raping a female doctor on duty in the hospital on August 9 last year and brutally murdering the doctor after the rape.

Kolkata Police had arrested Sanjay Roy on August 10 itself. Initially this case was investigated by Kolkata Police, but later on the instructions of Calcutta High Court, its investigation was handed over to CBI. CBI has demanded death penalty for accused Sanjay Roy in the case.

The hearing in the doctor’s rape and murder case began on November 12 and during this, 50 witnesses were questioned. The victim’s parents have suspected the involvement of other people in the crime and demanded in the court that a more detailed investigation be conducted into the matter. Anger and resentment were seen across the country regarding the incident at RG Kar Hospital. During this period, protests, marches and rallies were organized at various places in the country. There was a lot of politics on this issue and opposition parties BJP and CPI(M) tried to corner the TMC government for this heinous crime.However, non-political movements demanding justice for the victims were more visible, in which ordinary citizens played an important role.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, the Supreme Court had constituted the National Task Force (NTF) to suggest a protocol for the safety of doctors and other medical professionals across the country.
