Ashok Lavasa Resigns as Election Commissioner

Date:

Ashok Lavasa has resigned from the post of Election Commissioner. He submitted his resignation to President Ramnath Kovind on Tuesday. Lavasa could become the Chief Election Commissioner next year. Lavasa’s resignation makes Sunil Chandra a contender for Election Commission Chief.

Lavasa will join the Asian Development Bank (ADB) next month. Last month, ADB appointed him vice-president. Lavasa is a 1980 batch retired IAS officer. Ashok Lavasa will replace Diwakar Gupta, whose term ends on 31 August this year.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), while announcing the appointment, had said, “ADB has appointed Ashok Lavasa as the Vice President in the Bank for Private Sector Operations and Public Private Partnerships.” He will replace Diwakar Gupta, whose tenure is till 31 August.

There had been huge stir after the inquiry being initiated against his family members, since the time the Modi government returned to the power. It had been observed as a price being paid by the election commissioner for not giving clean chit to Narendra Modi and Amit Shah in the matter of electoral process violation.
