The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and former captain of the Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly, on Sunday met West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. Sources in the Raj Bhavan said that it was a courtesy call and it has nothing to do with politics. It is noteworthy that in the wake of the state assembly elections to be held in April-May next year, speculations are being made for Ganguly to join politics.
Sourav Ganguly reached Raj Bhavan at around 4.40 pm, but did not answer any questions regarding the reasons for the meeting. The meeting between Ganguly and Dhankar lasted for five to forty minutes in the evening. Sources in Raj Bhavan said that Ganguly’s meeting with the governor was not related to the state’s political activities.
However, a media report last month claimed that Sourav Ganguly has told the BJP leadership that he neither wants to enter politics nor campaign for the party during the assembly elections. The online version of ‘The Telegraph’ had quoted this. The report said that Sourav Ganguly has made it clear to the BJP that he does not want to join active politics and is happy with his role as a cricket administrator.
Amid speculation about Dada’s entry into politics, the Trinamool Congress had said that if it happens then it will be very sad. When TMC MP Saugata Rai was asked on speculation about Sourav Ganguly joining politics, he said that he would not be happy if he comes into politics. Sougat Roy said that Sourav Ganguly is an icon for all Bengalis, as he is the only cricket captain from Bengal.
