A Leaderless World

Date:

During these times of great crisis, which has hit not only a city, a state or a nation; but a global pandemic, the entire human race was expecting a world leader to step forward and take some measurable steps in right direction, to save the world from huge sufferings, from upcoming devastation.

It’s the end of an era, one can say as the virus has killed thousands, and at the time you will be reading this article, the number might have increased to another thousand. The degree, to which it might affect the world, is still unclear.

If this plague, that cares not a whit for the class or status of its victims, cannot teach solidarity over individualistic excess, nothing will. If this continent-hopping pathogen cannot demonstrate the precarious interconnectedness of the planet, nothing will.

All the time, during this pandemic outbreak, what the world is missing is a world leader who can step forward and show some strength, who can lead the world all the way.

The two most powerful men on the planet, Chinese President Xi Jinping of China and American President Donald Trump have responded with pity national interest and forgetting the interests of the world. They have failed the world, the living humanity which can be considered as a super-power debacle.

China tried to cover up the entire debacle by initially covering up the outbreak by several weeks and then thumping its chest for controlling its widespread, however the number remains dubious. One may argue that China is giving international assistance, but in what form and at what cost? The form of assistance is in the form of defective masks and improper testing kits.

While Americans were dying, Trump tweeted that President Trump viewership is a ratings hit, and all that he could praise was astonishing number of viewers in his “coronavirus updates”. The website of US State Department has asked American Doctors to apply for visas at the nearest embassy. While the people are dying, America is sending its doctors away!

President Trump tried to purchase a German based company in order to show the world that he was the first to get the cure of the pandemic. He probably had a fantasy of the world-saving vaccine coming out of his country.

This pandemic is a war between human race and the virus which required a coordinated global action, which not only should be aimed at fighting against the disease, but to analyse and control its devastating impact on the economy, the job losses and the growth numbers round the globe. G20 saved the world economy once in 2007-2008, when it turned itself from a group of finance ministers to an institute of world leaders. But the question is can the G20 save the world from this pandemic?

But, for now the world unity is no where in sight. The world’s leaders are trapped into their national systems and are still under the dilemma of whether to save lives or economy.

It’s coming apart. Take care of it. We don’t give up. We are connected to one another and to generations past and future. There are no strangers here.
