Flood and Corona to Impact Bihar Elections

Date:

Floods and infection of corona virus before the assembly elections in Bihar have increased the difficulties of political parties. The Election Commission also has many questions about holding elections. Most parties except BJP and JDU are in favor of postponing elections under these circumstances. BJP’s ally LJP has also demanded the commission to carry forward the election. Earlier, various opposition parties including RJD and Congress have also said such a thing.

In view of the prevailing situation, the Election Commission had asked various parties of the state for their suggestions and comments on the election. These included 7 national and 43 regional parties. These parties have given their suggestions to the Commission by the deadline of 31 July. BJP’s LJP also wrote a letter to the Commission on Friday (31 July) demanding that the elections be postponed due to floods and viruses.

Earlier, opposition parties including RJD and Congress had also asked the Commission to postpone elections in these situations. The ruling BJP and JDU have left the matter to the Election Commission. Both these parties say that their preparations are complete. They will live with the commission’s decision.

Recently, the Commission had also stated its preparations for social distancing and masks etc. regarding elections. After the flood and havoc and corona infection have spread rapidly in the state for the last few days, now the Commission will have to take into consideration the health conditions as well as suggestions of various political parties. The situation in Bihar will remain in the problems for the next one and a half months and it can also worsen. Nothing can be said about virus infection. The flood situation will also be normal only after the monsoon.

All these conditions will also have an impact on the election. Political parties are also upset by this. The electoral work of many parties has not even started. However, BJP and JDU have done many programs at the party level. RJD has also done some preparations. If the conditions are good, then there is a possibility of assembly elections in Bihar in October-November. Elections are carried forward in circumstances and the new government is unable to run until the term of the Assembly ends, then the option of President’s rule is also open.
