The meeting of the Congress Working Committee came to an end on Monday evening after running for seven hours. In this meeting, it has been decided that Sonia Gandhi will remain the interim president of the Congress for the time being. However, a committee will be set up to help Sonia Gandhi in day-to-day functioning. The meeting of the party’s highest policy making unit, the CWC, took place through video conference as the two Congress camps were seen to be on the issue of leadership.
In the meeting, it was decided that the CWC meeting would be called again after the next six months. Till then only Sonia Gandhi will be the interim president of the party. Sonia Gandhi said at the end of the meeting that senior party leaders should express concern at the party forum itself. He said, ‘Congress is a big family and I am not speaking anything against anyone. But all, especially senior leaders, should express their concern at the party forum itself.
After the meeting, party leader PL Poonia said, ‘The members expressed confidence in Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and urged them to continue leading the party. She agreed to this. The next meeting will be called soon. It may be that the meeting will be held within six months, till then Sonia Gandhi will remain the interim president.
Earlier, Sonia Gandhi had offered to step down in the morning in the meeting and asked the CWC to initiate the process to elect a new president. According to sources, after the CWC meeting commenced, Sonia Gandhi said that she wanted to step down as interim president and sent a detailed reply to the organization’s general secretary KC Venugopal. A source said that after this, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and some other leaders urged him to continue in the post.
