A Decade of Change: Analyzing India’s Progress on Key Global Indices (2013 vs. 2022)

Date:

Over the past ten years, India has undergone significant change as a result of its swift economic development and shifting political climate. In order to better understand the country’s development, it is crucial to examine its performance on various global indices. This blog post will compare India’s rankings in 2013 and 2022 on various indices and discuss the effects of these changes on the growth and development of the nation.

Hungrier Nation

India placed 63 out of 121 nations in 2013 according to the Global Hunger Index. The ranking fell to 107 out of 121 by 2022, reflecting a rise in hunger and malnutrition in the nation. This drop in ranking highlights the urgent need for improved food distribution systems and nutrition programmes to deal with this problem.

No More Free Press

Press Freedom Index: Over the past ten years, the nation’s position in the index has also declined,       falling from 140 out of 179 nations in 2013 to 150 out of 180 nations in 2022. This decline reveals a rising concern for the right to free speech and the independence of the media to report the news without restraint or interference from the state.

Sad Nation

In a similar vein, India’s position on the Happiness Index dropped from 111 out of 130 in 2013 to 136 out of 146 in 2022. This shift emphasises the need for policies that prioritise overall life satisfaction, mental health, and well-being in addition to economic growth.

Beti Bachao?

India dropped significantly in the Global Gender Gap Index rankings from 101 out of 136 nations in 2013 to 135 out of 146 nations in 2022. This reveals a rise in gender inequality in the nation and emphasis the need for more robust policies and programmes to advance gender equality.

Mother Nature Suffers

India’s Environmental Performance Index ranking dropped the most, from 155 out of 178 in 2013 to 180 out of 180 in 2022, which is the lowest ranking ever. This alarming shift necessitates quick action to address environmental problems and put sustainable practices in place to safeguard the nation’s natural resources.

Falling democratic standards

India’s position on the EIU Democracy Index fell from 27th in 2013 to 53rd in 2022, reflecting a  deterioration in the nation’s democratic institutions and procedures.

These rankings make it clear that our country has experienced difficulties over the past ten years in several different areas. Despite some political claims of advancement, the nation’s international standings paint a worrisome picture. The government must concentrate on resolving these urgent problems and work to create a more just, democratic, and environmentally sustainable society if it is to sustainable growth and development.
